Vanilla extract is obteined grom a Mexican kind of
planifoliae orchid which is a climbing plant that uses large
trees to grow up as high as 35 meters. |

Pollination of this orchid is manually made, piece by piece,
as this plant is not capable of doing it by itself as a
little lid on the flower prevents it from doing so. Mexico
is the only place where natural fertization is done by a
special kind of a bee. Vanilla is grown in areeas with a
tropical weather which is warm and humid all the time. |

The extract is obtenined from the pods of the plant, which
have no scent at all before a long process that starts with
the recollection of the pods.
The first step is to pour hot water onto the pods and place
them in wooden boxes under the sun until they dry an turn
brown. As the process of driying continues the scent slowly
increases but is only after 8 months that the scent is
liberated in full. From each pod only 2% of extract after a
process where alcohols are used. |
